Apple Crumble

Quick to make and a dessert that everyone likes, apple crumble is one of those comfort foods.

We usually have a tin of apple pie filling in the cupboard to use for this, or use any apples that are available (usually the cheap/on special ones). You can use any type - some, like Granny Smith, might need a bit more sugar added to the apple mix, and the ones aimed as eating apples generally need a bit less time to cook.

Use any spices to change up the flavour, or even leave the spices out to highlight the apple flavour. Cinnamon always works well, small amounts of cloves and nutmeg are also good as is mixed spice. Probably avoid spices like cumin, paprika and chilli, but that's up to you.

Quantity: serves 4

Prep time: 10 - 15 minutes

Cook time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
Filling
3 - 4 Apples. You could also use 1 can of diced/sliced apples
4 Tbsp Brown sugar
1 - 2 tsp total Spices, e.g. cinnamon, mixed spice, nutmeg, cloves, ground coriander. Mix it up to change the flavours
Crumble Topping
½ c Flour
½ c Rolled Oats
½ c White sugar
75 gm Butter
½ tsp Ground cinnamon

Method

  1. If using tinned apples jump to step 5, peel the apples and remove the core then cut into slices about 2 - 3 mm thick or smallish chunks (about 1cm)
  2. Place the chopped/sliced apples into a bowl and sprinkle with half the sugar and some of the spices. Mix so the apples are coated and leave for about 20 minutes. If you don't have time for this then just go to the next step and cook the apples for a bit longer
  3. Tip the apples and any liquid into a pot. If you skipped step 2 then add a bit of water to stop them burning
  4. Cook for around 8 - 10 minutes with the lid off until they just start to soften. Not too long as you don't want a mush. Drain off any remaining liquid
  5. Put the apples into a bowl and add the brown sugar and spices. Mix until the apples are thoroughly coated
  6. Tip the apple mix into a baking dish. It helps with clean up if you grease the dish with butter first
  7. Clean and dry the bowl from the apples to use to make the crumble topping
  8. Add the flour, rolled oats, white sugar and cinnamon to the bowl and mix together
  9. Melt the butter in a biggish pot, then tip in the flour mixture and mix well so that there are no traces of flour visible. It doesn't need to be overly fine and there should still be some chunks of butter flour mix
  10. Spread the crumble mix evenly over the apples
  11. Bake at 180°C for about 20 minutes until the topping is a golden colour
  12. Serve with ice cream, cream or custard
